History & Staff
We have years of experience caring for families from all walks of life. Each family comes to us because they know we are leaders in our profession, dedicated to excellence in service, and have the highest integrity.
As a family owned firm, we strive to care for each family as if they were our own. As the grandson of a casket maker, our founder, the late Gene Hutchens, was a part of funeral service since birth. A veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, Gene taught at the St. Louis College of Mortuary Science and the American Academy of Funeral Service in New York City before establishing his own funeral home. In 1955, Gene and Rose Marie, his wife, founded the Florissant Mortuary in Old Town Florissant. By 1965, they had opened their current facility, the Hutchens Mortuary, located at 675 Graham Road in Florissant. Gene and Rose Marie's son, John Hutchens, now serves as President of the firm while John’s son, Mark Hutchens, serves as Secretary, representing the third generation of the Hutchens family to serve the greater St. Louis area. Nancy, Gene’s eldest daughter, oversees the prearrangement program. In every sense of the term, we are a family business.
